EPA says Hyundai & Kia overstated gas mileage

GasBuddy Blog -- The AP is reporting that Hyundai and Kia overstated the gas mileage on most of their models from the past three years in an embarrassing blunder that could bring sanctions from the U.S. government and millions of dollars in payments to car owners.

To be perfectly candid, I'm one of those car owners who've been duped. When my wife & I saw highway mileage at "40 mpg" that's one of the key reasons why we bought our Hyundai Elantra.

Because of the inflated mileage, discovered during an audit by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Korean automakers must retrofit the window stickers on the cars, reducing their fuel economy figures by one-to-six miles per gallon depending on the model, the agency said.

They are not a reflection of reality. Makes no sense that one or two car makers get slapped, the rest goes scotsfree.

I know because I have parts warranted by them because of this. Obviously they didn't learn anything. They said it was because of "procedural errors" but I find that hard to believe because Kia also did the same thing. EPA mileage ratings are usually a shot in the dark anyway.

Possible US fines and owner reimbursement payments may be coming. I thought the EPA provided the mpg figures for them to use, after testing the autos? Those wild and crazy Koreans are at it again! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!
