Amazonians sue Chevron over toxic waste

The Sydney Morning Herald -- TENS of thousands of Amazonians are suing Chevron, the American oil company, for poisoning their waterways in what is billed as one of the biggest environmental cases in history.

At that time, oil was cheap and production was not very high. Now, with oil being up, it's even worse. PS: if anyone likes to curl up with a book, read Alistair MacDonald's Athabasca. Very interesting thriller that plays in the tar pits of the Athabasca area. Although a ficticious novel, it does bring up a very large amount of problems with the oil industry in that area as early as the 1980s.

There's a huge "drill here, drill now and at any cost, who cares about those who live where the drilling is or what happens to the environment." I thinks it's a sign of the time that people have come to be so selfish they don't care even about their neighbors, yet, are wired across the country and can't be without texting / phone contact for just a few minutes while driving. We're living in a very skewed world. Sadly, there are precedents if people where to learn about history...

Just the fumes escaping from the sands are more than the pollution of several small counties in Europe. Glad you brought it up. ;-)

There is growing evidence from numerous sources now that the Northern Alberta Tar mining is one giant environmental disaster for Canada. I suppose time will tell whether it becomes as large a disaster as Ecuador's. Google the Oil Tar mining, you will be surprised!

"The court case is the result of the exploitation of the indigenous population by US trial lawyers and a corrupt government, according to Chevron." Note: the pollution is not the problem, it is US TRIAL LAWYERS. In an article a few weeks ago it was crooked judges. It is always someone else that is at fault. The oil in the waster by the wells could not possibly be the fault of Chevron.

All big companies care about is $$$. All anti-tree-hugger types should be thankful that we live in a place where there are at least some laws to control this type of activity. However, I read somewhere the same goes on even in northern Alberta, where there are open tailing pits.

When Exxon had to pay fines, did gas go up? When there is a recall of Beef and fines, does beef go up? When toy companies are sued because of defective toys or lead, to toy prices go up? NO. The profits to the share holders go down. If a company that was sued raised it's prices, it would loose customers and even more profits. Just wouldn't make sense.

Now, thanks to some fee-hungry shysters, they're dragging it back up again. It's been going on for a while, I went to the Texaco annual stockholders' meeting in 1996 and they had picketers outside. Chevron has their stockholder meetings in California, they don't move it around like some companies.
