Auto industry about to go diesel crazy

USA Today -- After hyping hybrids and electrics as fuel-savers, automakers will try to fire up consumers about a wave of new fuel-saving diesel models.
The latest will be the Volkswagen Beetle TDI, a diesel version of the iconic car, being introduced this week at the Chicago Auto Show.

VW, which already has diesel options for its Golf, Jetta, Passat and Touareg models, will be joined by new entrants in the U.S. market for diesel, such as General Motors, Mazda and Chrysler Group. Other makers, such as Honda, still are holding back some of their best, newest advanced diesels from the U.S., unsure whether buyers here will embrace them.

They have a much better range and they last much longer... I suspect US builders don't like that very much...

That is still not big enough of a difference for me to consider owning diesel vehicles, albeit the claim of it being cleaner and faster than past versions.

As a passenger you might not even realize that you are riding in one. As a driver you would notice the difference in low end torque. A diesel electric hybrid would make a lot of sense, but thus far only Volvo seems to have announced any plans in that direction.

It would take common sense to do so. My last three trucks have been Diesels and when I get my next one it will be also. I would like to have a Diesel in my car but will probably have to settle for a Natural Gas bi fuel engine.

About 85% of Volkswagen's Jetta SportWagen are sold in the diesel version despite it adding $1,250 to the car's $26,030 price tag. Education can treat ignorance.

The diesel combustion cycle is just more efficient at usable speeds than a gasoline engine. Some caveats--a diesel just works better with a manual transmission.

If you keep your car/truck for 10+ years you'll be pleased. Finding a station that offers diesel fuel is no problem.

Higher BTU's is what it's all about. Of course were still talking fossil fuel and our dependance on foreign fuel. The ULS fuel is cleaner burning but has more water in it. If you live where it is cold it is harder to prevent waxing and the " Drop Out" of the fuel after 72 hrs is significant.
