Big Brother Zeros in on License Plates

WIRED.COM -- The town council in Tiburon, a Marin County community just north of San Francisco, has unanimously voted to install license plate recording cameras in a bid to bring down crime.

So what’s the story? Does the town have an unusually high level of violent crimes? Hardly. From 2001 to 2008, this community of less than 9,000 people saw a total of 47 violent crimes, of which only one was murder. And Marin County is the richest in all of California.

To add to the metropolis suburb Shangri-La image, the town boasts a median household income of over $100,000, a median home value of almost $2 million with a list of residents –past and present– that makes the cast of Oceans Eleven look like a high school musical.

Tiburon officials voted 4-0 — one member was absent — to install six license plate re

State Farm has some interesting trivia on their Web site about what vehicles are most frequently stolen. The top ten are either import brand or they're pickup trucks; all the Detroit Three pickup trucks are represented.

The least frequently stolen are Buicks.

Nobody wants to steal American cars.

DanMtz from Oakland....

Agree! No telling what it might be used for...and it is overkill with such a high 'crime rate'. Tiburon is not a gated community.

Note too that the plate info will be archived for 30 days....wanna bet on that one?

Interesting. It seems like that data could be used for all kinds of sneaky, underhanded purposes if it fell into the wrong hands.

If all they are doing is looking at the license plates as they drive by on public streets, they don't seem to be violating anyone's privacy. It does not matter whether it is done by a camera or a policeman sitting in his car and running all of the plates of the cars that drive by.

sounds to me like they just want to know who is in the neighborhood and be able to document it in the event something does happen. with only 9,000 people, most of them probably know each other and what they drive already.

They want to try this where they think they can get a fair hearing. Or at least an uncontested trial period. Without getting into too many political issues. Must have been some money passing hands somewhere...

Not to worry. It is Marin County, and whenever someone gets a ticket as a result of the new devices, the traffic court judge will dismiss charges if the offender "had a difficult childhood", was upset because of family pressures or had been distressed owing to the way that some minor political issue was playing out.

We do not need more government control in this country. We American on the virge of bankruptcy because of this. When anarchy comes you want to see the crime rate rise.

It sounds like they can afford it and unlike the rest of us who are looking for money to buy the necessities, they are looking for extra ways to spend their money.

They have the money, so why not. By the way, a payment on a 2 million dollar home with 20% down, and an income of 100K does not compute. That's how we got into the financial mess we are in now. Not enough income to make the payments, even at 5% interest.

Already all over the Streets; Corners and on Traffic lights. Even here in the Red Neck Riviera. Then you have all the Business & home security cameras, Gps tracking in cell phones, cars etc. & satellites that can read your license from space. You thought no one saw you!
