Brazil to Invest $35.4 Billion in Sugar-Cane Fields for Fuel

Bloomberg -- Brazil’s government plans to boost investment in sugar-cane plantations by 60.5 billion reais ($35.4 billion) during the next four years to ensure an adequate supply of crops for the nation’s ethanol industry.

The government plans to introduce measures aimed at spurring the renewal of 6.4 million hectares (15.8 million acres) of aging plantations and the development of 5.2 million hectares of new fields, the Ministry of Agriculture said today on its website. It didn’t say when the policies will be announced.

Brazil is seeking to boost cane production after a shortage of ethanol drove up prices last year and prompted the government to cut the amount of the renewable fuel that must be blended into gasoline, according to Salim Morsy, an analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

For the engines available in the US, I'm no fan of ethanol. That said, sugar cane is far more efficient than corn when it comes to making ethanol.

It is a shame this ethanol can't be mixed with or simply substituted for home heating oil for us unfortunate few that don't have natural gas distributed to our communities and neighborhoods.

Hope the Brazilian govt. has set a limit on how far they will continue up the Amazon as they clear more and more of their rain forest lands.

Sugar cane produces more ethanol and we should be using that in the US - first. If not then we import it. Corn it not the total answer for the US. However Brazil should not destroy the forests for the production of sugar cane.

I saw this on the Discovery Channel. Wish we had a better climate for sugar cane; it's a far more efficient energy source than corn.

Good for Brazil! I still do not relish Ethanol in my tank unless by having it in the gas, the price per gallon drops by 50 cents to a buck a gallon. That may make up the for the drop in MPGs.

How safe is this for your car? If this is a safe with "no stings attached" alternative full to help Brazil and we remain friends to help stamp out drugs,-- negotiations and trials could be set perhaps. Sounds like a good resource Brazil with very intelligent research.
