Lawmakers want funds spent only on transportation

Washington Examiner -- Maryland lawmakers said Wednesday they couldn't support an increased gasoline tax without guarantees that revenue would be used only to fix the state's bridges and roads.

Nearly $1 billion was taken from Maryland's Transportation Trust Fund to balance the budget between 2003 and 2011, according to the state's Blue Ribbon Commission on Transportation Funding.

Some members of the House of Delegates said they had reservations about Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed 6 percent sales tax on gasoline unless the revenue was reserved for transportation spending.

"Absent a constitutional protection that ensures these monies will be protected, do you really think this is adequate protection?" said Del. Herbert McMillan, R-Anne Arundel County. "And there is an issue of trust here, a very deep ....

Fuel taxes are Not to be placed in the general fund and spent on other items. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

But once funds get into the Gen treasury they can spend it on what ever they want. They do it all the time. At the Most they will use the designated funds for the said purpose while they remove an equal or greater amount out from other funding for the same Depts. That's almost always how they pass new taxes, & Gambling, Lottos etc. Oh we need it for Hospitals, Schools or some other worthy project. But the total funding for the items frequently doesn't increase, if any only a portion of the tax only to later drop again so they can use it as an excuse again & again.

But wait if they would have left all of the social security deductions that we pay into the infamous lockbox instead of placing that money in the general fund it to might not be insolvent. When you have greedy politicians that only want to be re-elected they will steal from Peter to pay Paul. This is yet another reason to have term limits without pensions and golden parachute healthcare plans at tax payer expense.

Ashbuy09 hits the nail on the head... When ever politicians borrow funds from a well funded program they forget to pay it back.. Social security was well funded until the politicians got their fingers into it... Instead of using the funds for what it was intended for they dip into it and fund other programs and/or projects instead of setting up funds for the new projects...
