Lights, cameras, reaction: Resistance builds against red-light cameras

NBC News -- A rarity 15 years ago, red light cameras have become ubiquitous in many U.S. cities. Communities in 24 states and Washington, D.C., now use the cameras. Supporters say it’s worked. Cameras now monitor speed, bus and HOV lanes and intersections with stop signs.

But critics of red light programs worry about the Big Brother aspect. Many also say cameras, which are generally run by private companies, have spread not because they make streets safer, but because they mean profit.

Recent news stories have fueled opposition. In Chicago, the mayor banned one company from bidding for future contracts. In Iowa, doubts about the constitutionality led to a bill to ban cameras – a move already taken by at least 9 other states.

I don't like the cameras either, but I am worried that drivers are not able to follow the law. I think it is actually a problem with the fact that there are too many lights out there and we seem to be stopping at every light. I get that it seems.

Politicians get to reap money without raising taxes. They should have more courage. In Baltimore recently, a local reporter received a ticket for going 65MPH in a 30MPH zone, while sitting still at a traffic light. There are 6 cameras on just one street. You could receive 6 tickets in 5 minutes. They generate $30M a year. That's ridiculous.

But alas outsourcing seems to cost MORE money and they take in less.
