Liquid Battery Fuel Will Allow Quick Recharges

Technology Today -- Cambridge Crude, the nickname of a new MIT liquid battery recharging system, might bring the electric vehicle back to dominate the auto industry.

What if a new recharging infrastructure could be developed that lets you pump a liquid electric charge into your EV as fast as a gasoline fill-up?

The MIT researchers have named their new battery design the semi-solid flow cell. In this battery, electric energy is stored as a liquid. When the energy in the liquid runs down, the battery can be restored to full charge by pumping out the old liquid and pumping in a new batch of fully charged liquid. The run down liquid is recharged at the station and reused for the next car.

A prototype will be ready for testing sometime in 2013, and existing EVs could be retrofitted with this battery.

Fascinating!

Soon MIT will start to develop the use of Dilithium crystals, in order to start developing warp speed drive engines.

No mention of how this technology compares with gas or EVS as far as costs and mileage range.

Nowhere in this article are the inherent dangers of lithium discussed. I'm sure the MIT researchers are aware of its volatility and take the necessary precautions within the confines of their laboratories.

In the real world, it is one thing to use lithium in sealed batteries; it is an entirely different matter to be handling it (albeit, in a suspension solution) in public venues.

Gasoline is kids stuff compared to the environmental and safety hazards associated with lithium usage--in any form.

I'd think long and hard before getting all eco-infatuated with lithium because of a belief that oil is "evil".

There are nay sayers, there have always been,

But this kind of technology will become a reality.

Hopefully sooner than later.

They're still going to get you. What do you think they'll charge for the new energy liquid? What do you think they'll charge for a disposal fee for the old liquid being pumped out? They'll also charge taxpayers more to create disposal areas for the pumped out liquid as well as charging the car battery owners. This will be a big money grab for somebody, you can bet on it!!

Really interesting. Let's hope this technology makes it into the real world — current electric vehicle battery technology hasn't progressed much in the last 100 years.

WHAT??!! "Research on this new battery
technology has been funded by the
U.S. Department of Defense, U.S.
Department of Energy, and MIT."

Beats the hell out of swapping entire battery packs. I always felt that EV owners would need two battery packs, one to use while the other charged. The swap out would require a floor jack kind of rig.

This is not the answer! This is going to get very expensive in the l-o-n-g term. The item to be recharged is always going to take energy of some form or another to do the charging. Nice try, I like the effort but the results are not there for this one. I agree, KaBoom.

Basically its electrolyte exchange, nice! But we need to know more about the chemistry than the article tells us. This could really work if there are no or limited negative enviromental impacts of a spill. Good post.

OH I forgot!

We will have OSHA, EPA, Homeland Security, Dept of Education, FEMA all to protect us with expensive procedures to make the dream of electric vehicles cost prohibitive!

All to protect the children! Forgot the CPS in the list above!
