Matt Damon Film Cheers Pennsylvanians Who Say Fracking Pollutes

Bloomberg -- Some residents of a rural Pennsylvania region at the heart of the natural gas boom say they hope that a Matt Damon film about drilling will return scrutiny to complaints about water pollution rejected by state and federal regulators.
“Promised Land,” opened nationwide Jan. 4, including at the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. It’s the closest showing to the town of Dimock, where residents have drawn national attention with a years-long battle against regulators they claim have failed to hold gas drillers accountable for environmental damage.

‘Not Reflective’
“This film is purely a work of fiction and is not reflective of the work our industry undertakes,” Steve Forde, a spokesman for the Marcellus Shale Coalition, a Pittsburgh-based industry group, said in an e-mail.

Of course it always helps if the storyline, directing and editing are top notch as well. Academy awards occur when all of these ingredients come together in one movie. Now about Matt Damon. I like his dedication to acting. He's smart. Matt's IQ has been advertised as 160 which is genius level. Does that mean he should use his stardom to attract attention to controversial subjects? I suppose it's alright if he is passionate enough about it. In Matt's case, he's smart enough to realize he will attract both negative as well as positive fan reaction to his latest soapbox performance. But has Matt Damon been hypnotized by his own acting success into believing his intelligence is superior enough to not be fooled by anecdotal evidence masquerading as truth? In some ways it doesn't matter to his fans. Some will feel he stepped over the line, loosing them as fans, while others will applaud him and remain fans.

Not all "frakkers" are polluters (at least I hope not), but maybe more safety features could be built into mineral leases to prevent the bad ones from polluting the ground water.
