Fulfilling a promise to the village of Nuiqsut before the start of its North Slope exploration program, Repsol E&P USA has suspended drilling operations while it investigates the cause of a blowout at one of its four North Slope exploration pads.

"We have temporarily suspended our drilling operations in Alaska while we investigate the incident to fully understand the cause and to put in place preventative measures for future drilling operations," Greg Smith, director of the U.S. Business Unit for the Spanish oil major said in an email on Feb. 22. Probably worse than their PR firm has been telling us? Another example of a 'failsafe' system gone wrong?

Makes sense, this was a very rare occurrence and a small one, but cover all the bases to avoid a repeat and get back to drilling.

Probably the same reason for the Gulf blowout. When you ignore/forego safety procedures in favor of schedule/production, you have a disaster waiting to occur.
