The Milk Man’s Lesson: Car Choice Can Work

Newsmax -- Can the United States create jobs, lower the price of fuel, reduce emissions, and become energy-independent all at the same time?

The answer is, “Yes — and rather quickly.”

The simple answer correlates with a rather simple solution being evangelized by Marc Goldman, a former milk company executive from New Jersey.

Marc is not a household name, but he once made big headlines in New York for taking on the state’s powerful dairy interests and a system that kept milk prices artificially high by limiting competition among dairies.

Today, Marc spends his time on another worthy crusade — promoting the Open Fuel Standard Act of 2011, known in the House as H.R. 1687 and in the Senate as S. 1603.

I like the theory, but big oil companies will never let this happen. I am sure they would "donate" billions to the president's campaign fund.

Great article...If cars could run on hot air, we would have an endless supply from DC.

@doggod

Sure, if the free market is allowed to function unhindered, manufacturers will make flex fuel vehicles to meet demand. The problem is that there are other interests, such as those of big oil, who influence manufacturers. If they can get auto makers to NOT make flex fuel vehicles, then demand won't be met, and some people may just think that there's low demand for it. Sometimes it DOES "take another fiat from the coercive sector to make the voluntary marketplace work."

Just like in the article, when a company/group has power, as the dairy industry in NY did, then they will do what they can to protect their profits and business models. I'm sure the oil industry is doing everything they can to slow do the adoption of hybrids, EVs, flex fuel, etc., so they can keep their record profits going a little longer.

Flex-fuel is a winner for the US. US Gov't should require import companies to add Flex to some percentage of their vehicles sold here. That would get consumers buying them eventually. Then the methanol production would increase due to the demand. Thus reducing the usage of gasoline. Then US companies would produce FF vehicles in higher numbers.

He makes some very good points that all Americans know. Let's do the right things we know will work and demand our leaders do it now we before they lead us to the Greatest Depression and into war.

Great article doeslayersr! It takes a "Milk Man" to come up with great ideas that would be for the good of the country.

Throw out the garbage and lets hire some milk men in November.

Switch to algae-based bio-fuels and that'll take care of at least 70% of our 'foreign' oil imports.

Fuel competition. Taken to the cars. So, taken to the extreme, a car can run on gasoline, electricity, natural gas, and whatever else that can be thrown at that the technology exists for?

If there's a big demand for flex-fuel vehicles, manufacturers will gladly make them. It doesn't take another fiat from the coercive sector to make the voluntary marketplace work. It just takes vehicles that make sense dollar-wise.

As long as it is done with private sector dollars (investment dollars, not tax payer dollars), then let market demand decide what survives.

Eliminate the tax credits and rebates for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Do not subsidize the development or distribution of any vehicle or fuel.
