U.S. Installed Record 13.2 Gigawatts Of Wind Energy In 2012

Forbes -- With a key federal tax incentive about to expire, the U.S. installed a 5.5 gigawatts of wind power in December to cap off a year that saw a record 13.2 gigawatts of wind energy come online, according to a report released Friday by research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The U.S. now boasts a total of 60 gigawatts of wind energy, accounting for 6% of the nation’s total generating capacity.

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, wind power prices have dropped more than 21% since 2010. Falling prices and the looming expiration of the production tax credit, which pays a premium for wind energy, unleashed a wind farm building boom last year.

“It’s clear that the economics, aided by the PTC, drove wind growth in 2012,” Amy Grace, a wind analyst with Bloomberg New Energy Finance, said

Used to work near a turbine blade maker and they were just pumping out those things. Now, they have been slowed by the oil boom as ND isn't taking much interest in wind, which we have a lot of.

As time goes by I am sure they will make strides to improve on that. We must understand that somewhere in the future we will run out of oil and ddeposit sites for spent nuke stuff. The sooner we find other means of providing power the better off we will be.

The government needs to quit wasting money on these technologies and a lot of the money goes overseas.

With enough wind turbine units operating, the generated 'green' electricty will get more and more. There are wind farms that have been left to 'rust' because maintenance is so high and the return is very low for the electrical power generated, it very much depends on the area of generation. Wind turbine and solar panel electrical generation is Not cheaper than hydro or nuclear power. How do you store that 'green' energy from Solar and Wind for later use? What happens when the production tax credit expires? Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. More power can be generated than there is capacity to move it. More transmission lines are needed to move it to where it needs to go. That is called infrastructure and nobody wants to pay for it.
